What Do Hamsters Need in Their Cage?

Creating the right enclosure for your hamster requires more than just the essentials. Choosing the right hamster accessories and supplies helps support natural behaviours, reduce stress, and create a safe, enriching environment where your hamster can feel confident.

From sand baths and hides to sprays and platforms, each hamster accessory plays a role in building a natural enclosure that supports both physical health and mental wellbeing.

In this guide, you’ll learn exactly what hamsters need in their cage and how to create a properly enriched setup.

What Your Hamster Needs for their Enclosure

A hamster enclosure should provide everything needed to support natural behaviours such as burrowing, foraging, hiding, and exploring.

At a minimum, every hamster needs:

  • A suitably sized enclosure (minimum 100cm x 50cm or larger)
  • Deep bedding (20–30 cm) for burrowing
  • A large wheel appropriate for their size (Syrian hamsters 28cm+, Dwarf hamsters 21cm+)
  • A sand bath for grooming
  • Multiple hides, including a multi-chamber hide
  • Foraging opportunities, such as sprays and scattered food
  • Enrichment items, including tunnels, textures.
  • Stable platforms to support heavier accessories like sand baths and wheels
  • Fresh water and a balanced diet

A well-designed enclosure includes more than the minimum setup. Adding a variety of hamster accessories helps create a more natural, stimulating environment that supports both physical and mental wellbeing.

Essential Hamster Accessories

Sand Baths

A sand bath is one of the most important hamster accessories. Hamsters use sand to clean their fur and remove excess oils, helping keep their coat healthy.

A large sand bath also doubles as enrichment, allowing digging and natural grooming behaviours.

Hides & Multi-Chamber Hides

Hamsters are prey animals and need secure hiding spaces to feel safe.

Multi-chamber hides mimic underground burrows and allow hamsters to sleep, store food, and nest in separate areas.

Providing multiple hides throughout the enclosure helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour.

Platforms

Platforms create a stable, raised surface for heavier accessories like sand baths and wheels.

They prevent items from sinking into bedding and allow for better enclosure structure and layout.

Platforms also help maximise usable space within deeper bedding setups.

Sprays & Foraging Accessories

Sprays are a key part of hamster enrichment.

They encourage natural foraging behaviours such as harvesting, peeling, and food storing while also providing essential enclosure coverage.

Hamster Wheels

A correctly sized wheel is essential for exercise and overall health.

A wheel that is too small can cause discomfort and long-term health issues, so choosing the right size for your hamster species is important. As a guide, Syrian hamsters typically require wheels 28cm or larger, while dwarf hamsters should have wheels 21cm or larger.

Substrates & Dig Areas

Different substrates add texture and allow digging behaviours.

Providing a variety of digging areas keeps the enclosure engaging and supports natural instincts.

Enrichment Accessories for Hamsters

Enrichment is what turns a basic enclosure into a thriving environment.

Hamster enrichment accessories should encourage:

• Foraging
• Digging
• Exploring
• Hiding
• Climbing over (not steep climbing)
• Interaction with their environment

A combination of sprays, tunnels, textures, and hides helps create a space that feels natural and stimulating.

The more opportunities your hamster has to interact with their enclosure, the more confident and active they are likely to be.

Free 3D Printable Bridge (Personal Use Only)

When I first started RoseLark Pet Products in August 2025, I began designing enrichment pieces focused on natural, functional enclosure layouts.

In September 2025, I shared one of my early hamster bridge designs publicly for the small pet community. This design is available as a free 3D printable file for anyone who has access to a 3D printer and would like to create enrichment for their own pets at home.

The bridge was designed in Fusion 360 as a single-piece structure with smooth curves and reinforced edges, making it both sturdy and easy to print (with supports). It provides a simple way to add texture, elevation, and exploration to a hamster enclosure.

What to Avoid

Not all hamster products on the market support proper welfare.

Some common items to avoid include:

  • Small cages that do not provide enough depth or space for burrowing
  • Fluffy or unsafe bedding materials
  • Wheels that are too small or that do not have a solid surface
  • Accessories with steep drops or unsafe heights
  • Compressed sawdust hides, bridges and chews

Choosing hamster accessories designed with welfare in mind makes a significant difference to your hamster’s wellbeing.

Example of a Fully Enriched Hamster Enclosure

The difference enrichment makes to an enclosure is significant — both visually and in how secure your hamster feels.

A well-enriched enclosure includes:

• Deep bedding for burrowing
• Multiple hides and sheltered areas
• A sand bath on a stable surface
• Sprays for coverage and foraging
• A correctly sized wheel
• A variety of textures and substrates

This kind of setup encourages natural behaviours and helps your hamster feel safe and confident.
