Frequently Asked Questions About Hamster Platforms

What height hamster platform should I choose?

The right hamster platform height depends on your enclosure size, bedding depth and hamster species.

As a general guide:

8–10cm platform – Suitable for lower-height enclosures such as Zoozone 2 or Duna 100 × 50 setups. These enclosures are typically only suitable for dwarf species, as they do not allow space for a properly sized upright Syrian wheel.

15cm platform – Ideal for placing under a correctly sized upright wheel for a Syrian hamster. This height keeps the wheel stable while still allowing deep bedding around the structure.

20cm+ platform – Best used as a structural platform within larger enclosures. This height allows you to maintain the recommended 20cm+ bedding depth while keeping heavier items stable on the enclosure base.

The goal is always to support deep bedding without creating unsafe drop heights.

Should hamster platforms sit on bedding or the enclosure base?

Hamster platforms should always sit directly on the enclosure base, never on loose bedding.

Placing a platform on bedding can cause instability, collapse burrows underneath and create uneven pressure points. Instead, position the platform on the base and build bedding up around it to maintain a stable enclosure structure while allowing natural burrowing.

What should hamster platforms be used for?

Hamster platforms are designed to provide stable support for heavier enclosure items such as wheels, sand baths, hides or water bowls.

Without a platform, these items can sink into deep bedding or collapse tunnels underneath. A properly placed hamster platform keeps items level and secure while still allowing the enclosure to maintain deep bedding.

Do hamster platforms replace deep bedding?

No. Platforms should never replace deep bedding.

Hamsters require 20–30cm of bedding to create natural burrows and nesting chambers. Platforms simply allow heavier items to sit securely on the enclosure base while bedding is built up around them.

Used correctly, platforms help maintain deep bedding while preventing heavy items from sinking or collapsing burrows.

Do taller platforms make enclosures unsafe?
Platforms should remain low and functional rather than tall structures.

Hamsters are burrowers, not climbers, and their bodies are not designed for falls. The purpose of a platform is to provide stability for enclosure items, not to create elevated climbing areas.

When used correctly, platforms help support safe and stable enclosure layouts.
