Product & Safety
What types of products does RoseLark Pet Products offer?
RoseLark Pet Products creates thoughtful, ethical care ‑focused accessories for small pets — designed with charm, accessibility, and animal wellbeing at the heart of every piece.
What are the products made from?
All items are made using PLA, a plant‑based, non‑toxic bioplastic that’s safe for pets and gentle on the planet. Every design is tested for durability, comfort, and species‑appropriate sizing, ensuring hamsters, gerbils, mice, and other small pets can explore, forage, dig, and play with confidence.

Are your products safe for hamsters, mice, and other small pets?
Yes. Our 3D printed accessories are designed using pet-safe materials and created specifically for modern small pet habitats. We focus on practical designs that support enrichment, structure and comfort. Each design is created with species‑appropriate sizing and behaviour in mind.
What animals are your products suitable for?
Most items are suitable for hamsters, rats, mice and other small pets. Always consider species size and natural behaviour when selecting accessories.
Can your hides be used with deep substrate?
Yes. Our our hides and structural accessories are designed to integrate with deeper substrate levels, helping maintain usable burrowing space.
For guidance on choosing the right size, see our Hamster Hide Guide.
What material are your 3D printed items made from?
All RoseLark 3D printed products are made using PLA (Polylactic Acid) — a plant-based bioplastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane.
PLA is widely used in food packaging and medical applications because it is:
- Non-toxic
- BPA-free
- Lightweight yet durable
- Made from renewable materials
We carefully select high-quality PLA to ensure our products are safe for use in hamster enclosures when used as intended.
While PLA is durable, it is not designed to be heavily chewed. If your hamster is a persistent chewer, we recommend monitoring use and providing plenty of appropriate chew enrichment to redirect that behaviour.
All products are designed with hamster welfare in mind — prioritising smooth edges, practical functionality, and enrichment value.
If you’d like to learn more about the material itself, you can read our guide:
👉 What Is PLA?
How do I clean PLA products?
Wipe with a damp cloth or rinse with cool water. Avoid hot water or high heat, as PLA can soften at around 60°C.
Are PLA 3D printed products dishwasher safe?
No, they will soften and warp under high temperatures so please hand wash only.
Are 3D printed hamster hides safe?
When made using pet-safe materials and appropriate design standards, 3D printed hides are safe for small pets. At RoseLark, our accessories are designed specifically for enclosure use and prioritise smooth edges, structural stability and practical layout integration.
Can hamsters chew 3D printed accessories?
Hamsters may explore accessories with their teeth, but structural accessories are not intended as chew toys. Always provide appropriate chew-safe materials alongside structural habitat items.
If your pet begins excessive chewing, please remove the item to prevent ingestion or damage. It’s recommended to check for wear periodically.
Enrichment & Habitat Setup
What size cage/enclosure do I need for my hamster?
For hamsters in the UK, a minimum cage size of 100cm x 50cm (5,000 sq cm unbroken floor space) is widely recommended under modern welfare standards to support natural behaviour and proper enrichment.
This provides:
- 5,000 square cm of unbroken floor space
- Approximately 40 inches x 20 inches
- Around 800 square inches of usable floor space
Meeting this minimum hamster cage size allows adequate room for deep substrate, multiple hides, a sand bath and clearly defined enrichment zones. When researching hamster cage size in the UK, it’s important to focus on total unbroken floor space rather than cage height or levels.
For Syrian hamsters, enclosure height also matters. A minimum internal height of 50cm is recommended to comfortably accommodate an upright wheel suitable for a Syrian (typically 28cm in diameter) while still allowing space for bedding depth.
Many traditional cages sold in pet shops fall below these recommended hamster enclosure size standards and may not provide sufficient space for welfare-focused setups.
Before choosing a hamster cage, always research current, evidence-based enclosure recommendations rather than relying solely on packaging claims.
For a full breakdown of hamster enclosure size standards, wheel guidance and habitat structure, see our Complete Hamster Welfare Guide.
How deep should hamster bedding be?
Hamsters require deep bedding substrate to allow proper burrowing, at least 8"-10" (20cm) of compacted bedding. Many welfare-focused setups recommend significantly deeper bedding than traditional pet shop advice. Substrate depth allows burrowing, nesting and scent marking.
You can learn more in our Complete Hamster Welfare Guide.
Do hamsters need a sand bath?
Yes. Sand baths support natural grooming behaviour and help maintain coat condition. A properly sized sand area also acts as enrichment.
Read our guide on Why Your Hamster Needs a Sand Bath for more information.
Are sprays good for hamsters?
Natural sprays encourage foraging by allowing hamsters to harvest seeds themselves. This slows feeding, increases mental stimulation and mirrors natural behaviour.
Learn more in our article on Why Hamster Sprays Are Essential for Enrichment.
How often should I add sprays to an enclosure?
Sprays like Delica and Pagmia aren't usually eaten so can be used full time. Fatty sprays such as Flax can be offered occasionally, we recommend refreshing these whenever you do a burrow clean/enclosure tidy. Varying placement and type helps maintain novelty and stimulation.
What makes a good hamster enclosure setup?
A welfare-focused enclosure includes:
- Deep substrate for burrowing
- Multiple hides
- A sand bath
- Foraging enrichment
- Adequate floor space
Our Small Pet Enrichment Collection is designed to support these elements.

What size hide does a Syrian hamster need?
Syrian hamsters require larger hideouts that allow them to turn around comfortably and create a nest. All openings must be a minimum of 7cm wide. The hide should not feel cramped but still provide a secure, enclosed space. For more guidance, see our Hamster Hide Guide.
You may also find helpful welfare resources on our Small Pet Welfare Resources page.
What size hide does a Dwarf hamster need?
Dwarf hamsters can use larger hideouts but may prefer smaller hides. All openings must be a minimum of 6cm wide. The hide should not feel cramped but still provide a secure, enclosed space. For more guidance, see our Hamster Hide Guide.
You may also find helpful welfare resources on our Small Pet Welfare Resources page.
Do hamsters need more than one hide?
Yes. Providing multiple hideouts allows hamsters to create separate sleeping, food storage and retreat areas. This mirrors natural burrow systems and helps reduce stress within the enclosure.
Are multi-chamber hides better for hamsters?
Multi-chamber hides can better replicate natural underground nesting systems. Separate chambers allow for sleeping, storing food and privacy. When sized correctly, they support natural behaviour and improve enclosure structure.
